Blog 10: Shanghai Disney

Our First day at the newest Disney park in the system…  Shanghai Disney.  This was a fun, quick free day off with the family.  The kid’s teachers had a work day, so we took the American-school day off in China while the Chinese students stayed in school.  This provides the best chance at reasonable lines in the land of 24 million people. 

Disney was cool.  It basically followed the same script as Orlando with two big awesome differences.  First, space mountain has been upgraded and renamed “Tron”.  This ride looks like the movie and instead of riding in a normal roller coaster, you jump on a motorcycle… yes a motorcycle roller coaster. 

Secondly, the Pirates of the Caribbean got a major face lift.  Big time improvement.  They turned it into a 4D ride that splits between under and above water.

 Best part was spending time together… it was a fun, spontaneous, China payday for the family.  

Picture 1 - The Arrival:  We didn't tell the kids were we were going... Jacob figured it out, but the girls were clueless until they saw the castle.  This park is really, really nice.  Very new, very clean, and great improvements on classic rides.  


Picture 2 - Space Mountain, improved:  I know Space Mountain is a classic, but it is also wildly out run its course.  Tron is the new improvement and it doesn't disappoint.  Imagine riding a motorcycle roller coaster; back clam shell, calf bars... It was on.  Everyone like this one.

 Picture 3 - Star Wars is everywhere:  A truly global brand.  Everyone in China knows about Star Wars... The park section was ok, but not totally great.  I can't wait for the Orlando Star Wars Park to open.

Picture 5 - A bigger castle:  This castle is done up right... It is bigger than Orlando and looks cool in the distance... when the pollution is low.  Note also - the many faces of Emily Reese.

 Picture 7 - High score?  me!:  Not trying to brag, but i crushed the Toy Story ride.

Marco Polo called Suzhou the Venice of the east primarily because it (and many others) were built around a series of canals just like Venice.  Unfortunately, many of those areas have been lost to “progress”.  China has a rather repugnant reputation when it comes to preserving history.  It started during the Cultural Revolution in the 70’s but followed during the Industrial revolution.  I can’t really blame them for much… If getting 1billion people out of poverty means that you lose a bit of history, then so be it.  You certainly don’t hear the 1billion complaining and I am in no place to challenge the strategy.  There is no question that china’s pace of change has been remarkable and that they will emerge again as a global power…  It is just a matter of time. Post 1: The Arrival, 7-August-2017

Often the greatest opportunities require sacrifice and, at some point, a leap of faith.  Just like our decision to move to Holland 10 years ago, China offered similar concerns, feelings and reservations.  Although, when looking back on the Holland decision today, it seems like a no-brainer compared to China.  We structured the summer to be full of activities with our family and friends; nearly every moment was scheduled.  Amanda took the lead on organizing the madness as I split my time equally between Asia and the US.  In the end, we wore ourselves out, but also logged a very impressive summer docket:  LSU Graduation in Baton Rouge, 4 th of July party with my family at our house, Orange Beach (with Dixons), New Orleans (with Skenas & Grandma Judy), Washington DC (with my Dad), Gettysburg & Amish Country & a wedding (with the entire Buckwalter & Schultz clans), dinners, lunches, playdates, house hunting in Shanghai (Amanda and I), PPC...

Blog 23 - Dixon's take the China challenge

You can take people out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the people.   Leaving the USA for the first time is a bit tough… making China your first destination is kind of ridiculous.   China is just really, really foreign; the characters, the congestion, the communication, the internet, and the smog all make it harder than most international trips.    Still they did it.   They started the 10-day trek on early Monday morning and arrived mid-day Tuesday.   I met them at the airport with our driver and then we motored home.   It took a bit of time getting through customs, but they did it like champs.   Traffic on the way home, however was horrible so we didn’t get to the house until 4:30pm.   The kids (both ours and theirs) were so excited to see one another.   They instantly returned to friend mode and immediately ran around the house giving tours and playing at the same time.   Amanda prepared pulled p...
